THERAPY TYPES
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
What if every part of you had a voice—and a reason for being?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a powerful, compassionate approach to therapy that helps you understand and heal the different “parts” within you—like the inner critic, the people-pleaser, the protector, or the overwhelmed child.
Instead of seeing these parts as problems, IFS helps you get to know them, understand their roles, and work with them from a place of curiosity and care. At the center of it all is your core Self—a calm, wise, and grounded inner presence that can lead your healing. IFS is about building inner trust, creating balance, and feeling more whole.
How is IFS different from traditional talk therapy?
FOCUSES ON INTERNAL HARMONY
Instead of just exploring thoughts, behaviors, or external problems, IFS helps you connect with the different “parts” of yourself, each with its own voice, feelings, and needs.
NON-PATHOLOGIZING
Parts aren’t seen as bad or broken, even if they’re causing distress—they’re trying to help in their own way and can be transformed through understanding.
EMPHASIZES INNER LEADERSHIP
IFS believes you have a wise, grounded “Self” within you that can guide healing, rather than relying solely on the therapist for answers.
GOES BEYOND SURFACE LEVEL INSIGHT
IFS helps you form real, emotional relationships with parts of yourself, leading to deeper and more lasting change.
PARTICULARLY HELPFUL FOR TRAUMA
By creating safety and internal connection, IFS gently helps access and heal wounded parts without re-traumatizing.
Frequently Asked Questions
HOW DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK?
In IFS therapy, you’ll work with a trained therapist to identify and connect with different "parts" of yourself. These parts may include those that protect you, parts that are wounded or in pain, or parts that feel vulnerable. You’ll learn how to approach these parts with curiosity and compassion, helping them feel heard and understood. Over time, IFS helps these parts work together harmoniously, allowing you to feel more whole and centered.
WHAT IF I CAN'T ACCESS MY "PARTS"?
It’s common for some people to have difficulty accessing their parts, especially if they’ve experienced trauma or if the parts are heavily guarded. If this happens, your therapist will gently guide you through the process, helping you build trust and safety. Sometimes, learning to connect with these parts takes time, and that’s okay—your therapist will support you at your own pace.
CAN IFS HELP WITH LOW SELF-ESTEEM?
Yes, IFS can be very effective for improving self-esteem and working through self-criticism. Often, negative self-talk and harsh inner criticism come from parts of us that are trying to protect us but end up creating more harm. IFS helps you identify and transform these parts, allowing you to develop a more compassionate, positive relationship with yourself.
